Student entry - VET Fee Help

For eligible qualifications, TAFE Queensland will offer students the ability to access VET FEE-HELP student loans. The Commonwealth Government establishes a set of criteria that students need to meet before they are able to access VET FEE HELP loans.

Eligibility Criteria

What You Need to Know

You can apply for VET FEE-HELP funding for eligible qualifications if:

(a) You are an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder (resident in Australia for the duration of the unit/s of study); or

(b) Are a New Zealand citizen who:

  1. holds a special category visa;
  2. first entered Australia as a minor under 18 years of age;
  3. has lived in Australia for at least 8 of the last 10 years; and
  4. has lived in Australia for at least 18 months in the last two years.

You also need to have met each of the following criteria to apply for VET FEE-HELP funding for eligible qualifications:

  1. Have not exceeded their FEE-HELP limit;
  2. Be a full fee-paying (fee-for-service) student or a student subsidised by the Queensland Government;
  3. Be enrolled in an approved Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma level qualification or unit/s of study, or a specific Certificate IV qualification offered by TAFE Queensland;
  4. Be enrolled by the Census date for the approved unit/s of study;
  5. Submit a valid Request for VET FEE-HELP Loan form on or before your Census date;
  6. Have a Tax File Number or a Certificate of Application for a Tax File Number;
  7. Have met any other entry requirements for the qualification or unit/s of study; and
  8. If you are under the age of 18 you must have your application co-signed by a parent/guardian (unless the student is certified as independent).

Cooling Off Period

What You Need to Know

When you enrol in a VET FEE HELP eligible program TAFE Queensland provides you with a cooling off period of 2-business days. This provides you with time to make sure of your choice to take out a loan for your tuition.

It's important to note that if you enrol in unit/s of study less than 2-business days before the Census date for the relevant units you will not be eligible for a VET FEE-HELP loan for those unit/s.

Student Suitability Criteria

What You Need to Know

All students enrolling in VET-FEE HELP eligible qualifications and applying for VET FEE-HELP funding have to demonstrate competence at (or above) Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both reading and numeracy.

You can do this by providing a copy of your Senior Secondary Certificate of Education.

If you do not have your Senior Certificate, or it does not demonstrate your competency, TAFE Queensland will make a literacy and numeracy test available to you, and provide you with instructions on how to complete it.

It is OK to enrol and then undertake the test.

Applying for VET FEE HELP

What You Need to Know

TAFE Queensland will provide you with a VET FEE HELP Information Booklet and the required VET FEE HELP Assistance form when you enrol. At this stage we will help you to work out all that you need to do to apply for your loan.

We will also make sure you understand what your Census date is for your units of study, this is the date when your VET FEE HELP loan needs to be finalised by and is really important because if you haven't made your loan arrangements by this date you will be required to pay your fees up front and in full.

If you need to undertake the reading and numeracy test we will let you know your outcome as soon as possible.

If for some reason you do not pass the reading and numeracy test, don't worry, we are here to help you identify what path you need to follow to continue with your studies.

Once you have met all the eligibility requirements make sure you have submitted your VET FEE HELP Assistance form and we look after your application from there.

We will let you know of the outcome of your application, and once your enrolment is confirmed we will also create your Commonwealth Higher Education Support Student Number (CHESSN).

You will know your loan has been confirmed when you receive your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN), and VET FEE HELP Invoice Notice. These items make your loan official.

If for some reason you need to dispute the outcome to your student entry decision we ask you to do that by lodging a formal complaint with TAFE Queensland.
